Opportunities For Service

Volunteer Services

Bethany's desire to share the love of Christ with church family and community results in their frequent opportunities to volunteer in a variety of activities. Some of these activities include:

  • Food Pantry Donations (collected every Communion Sunday)

  • Donations to the local school, food bank and other collections

  • Angel Tree at Christmas time

  • Movie on the grounds

  • Trunk or Treat

We look forward to having you join us for any of these activities. If interested, please use our contact form below.

Worship Team

Bethany's worship team practices for 30 to 45 minutes during the fall, winter and spring seasons on Sunday before the morning services .  They prepare an occasional special for some Sunday morning services, Christmas Cantatas, Easter music,  homecoming, etc., while learning the worship music for leading the church service.

Opportunities to Grow

Adult Bible Study - Sunday Mornings (9:30)

We have an adult Bible Study class that meets on Sunday mornings at the church, led by Mary Lee Bullock.  It is a multi-generational, coed class whose aim is to explore the lessons in a conversation style by examining the Bible through topical and practical studies that relate to issues facing society today.

Children's Church - Sunday Mornings

Before the message, children up to 4th grade are invited to leave the sanctuary for a special time of studying God's word and creating a craft.  When the Adult service is over, children will return to the adults they came to church with.

Community Dinner and Bible Study (First Wednesday every month)
On the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m., there is a community dinner and Bible Study. This is also a multi-generational, coed discussion group whose goal is to explore the Bible in a conversational style by examining the topical and practical studies that relate to issues facing people today. This group focuses on our spiritual growth while studying a variety of passages of the Bible in depth.

A Word from Our Pastor

Let me begin by saying “Welcome to our community of faith!”  It is our hope that you will encounter God in powerful ways through worship, Bible Study, fellowship, and service, and that you will feel connected with those you meet.

Bethany Baptist Church is a historical church that began meeting in 1770.  We have been in existence for almost 250 years and our heritage has been shaped by committed Christian believers who have sought to deepen their faith and to impact the surrounding community in a multitude of ways for Christ.

We would love to answer any questions you have about ways to deepen your faith journey, or about ways to get involved in our family of faith.  Please do not hesitate to contact us.  I would love to have the opportunity to visit with you and your family about connecting with our congregation.

May you be challenged.  May you be embraced.  May you be blessed.

Our history...

Our history is long, intense and full of the power and majesty of God.  It is one of victory through fire and persecution.  The summary below of the church history is a re-write of a short history by Virginia Wright Durrett (April 14, 1992).  More in depth history is available thru PDF links below.

In 2020, it was the year of the celebration of 250 years in service to the Lord at Bethany Baptist Church formerly known as Guiney's Bridge.  It is a celebration of the history of a people steadfast in faithfulness to God.  Hundreds have passed through the portals of Bethany.  Among the current membership are descendants of the first.

The church was constituted in 1770 under the care of Elder Nathaniel Holloway.  He was followed by the celebrated Elder John Waller, then by Absalom Waller, the nephew of John.  Since then more than 30 other servants of God have served in leadership roles at Bethany.

The Bethany congregations have been housed in three buildings.  The first, a small frame building was replaced with a larger and more improved structure.  This was destroyed by fire in September 1842.  The third structure, built of brick, was erected 1843 and is the nucleus of the twice expanded church building currently accommodating the worship and educational services.  Exercising foresight, the church purchased adjacent parcels of land for church activities, for cemetery expansion and for parking.  This is testimony to the dedication, love and determination of the membership, both past and present.

To further study our church's story, its people and its faith, two additional copies of our history, one written by D. Blanton Allen (August 24, 1930 for the 160th Anniversary) and another by Andrew W. Bullock, Minister (for the 197th Anniversary) are available as PDFs.  There is a link to a page with a PDF reading app, and links are provided to download PDF documents.
